DeafSourced was created to enhance our Deaf Communities by working with community members to share and amplify the information we need to empower, interact, and participate in our communities.
Vision
We believe that we can help our Deaf communities grow and thrive through the use of journalism and communication tools, and that a strong media is critical to the health of our communities.
Deafsourced works to strengthen news by for and of our Deaf communities. We provide the tools, platforms and services for greater community information, engagement and collaboration in our Deaf communities. We believe that our collaboration strengthens all of us, and our communities.
“But to get there, the [media] ecosystem needs help as does everyone in it. Its members must start by aiding each other, by collaborating to do more together than each could do apart, thus finding efficiency; by concentrating on what each does best and thus improving the quality of that work; by sharing generously. These, too, are new skills for news people who have been accustomed to operating inside their moats, behaving competitively and secretly.” — Jeff Jarvis “What now for news? — Part III”
Our Principles:
- Collaboration – work with disparate organizations and existing media groups to create shared resources and synergies. Building networks, resources and sharing media among other things.
- Empowerment — make it as easy as possible for deaf citizens to provide their own information in means that are as accessible as possible.
- Relevance – provide information that is immediately relevant to the lives of all of our local deaf communities and their needs.
- Engagement – provide a positive impact on the community, allowing an informed community to advocate and take action for itself to better meet its needs.
Transparency:
We recognize that in order to foster and protect a lively public sphere, it must operate without hidden agendas or biases. The principals of fairness and transparency is integral to all aspects of our organization.
We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently on and not on the basis of donor support. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.
Donors and Sponsors:
In the interest of transparency, we will identify all major donors and sponsors who contribute over $1,000 and list them on our sponsor page.
